Fire has engulfed stalls at the Gikomba market, on Saturday morning, barely two weeks after a section of the trade centre was burned down.
Property of unestablished value went up in flames as firefighters from Nairobi County battled to put out the early morning inferno.
In a video doing round on social media, traders are seen trying to salvage the remains of their stock, with some counting losses worth millions.
The latest fire is the sixth that has occurred at the open air market this year, even as detectives try to comb for clues to establish the actual cause of the fire outbreaks.
Back in February a mysterious fire engulfed the open-air market and another one in August prompting the government to give orders for the installation of security cameras to help end the frequent fires at the market.
This was after Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, NMS Director-General Mohammed Badi and Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan visited the section that had been razed by the inferno.
Two months later on October 19, 2021, another mysterious fire razed down several stalls in the market with the same incident recurring on November 8, 2021.
Seeking to solve the solution, Nairobi County Government and the national government resolved to build a new five-storey Gikomba market at a cost of Ksh3 billion to end all the fire incidences.
Other than building CCTV centres to monitor the open-air market, the government is further planning to drill boreholes to provide running water for fire brigades in case of emergencies.
The government cautioned arsons, stating that they will be subjected to the full wrath of the law.
