Jay Z was not surprised or shocked when his mother came out as lesbian, in fact he was so happy and he shed tears of joy.
The legendary rapper himself announced to the world his mother is a lesbian back in 2017 when he released his new album ‘4:44’.
The personal revelations in the album appeared in the third track “Smile” in which Jay-Z announces that his mother is a lesbian.
“Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian/Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian. Had to hide in the closet, so she medicate/Society shame and the pain was too much to take,” rapped Jay-Z.
He also admits later in the track that his mother found love.
“Don’t matter to me if it’s a him or her/ I just wanna see you smile through all the hate/ Marie Antoinette, baby, let ’em eat cake.”
The legendary rapper spoke at length about his mother’s sexuality during an interview with David Letterman.
Jay Z said that while he knew his mum was a lesbian for a long time, it was only when he recorded 13th album 4:44 that he questioned her about it.
He revealed he cried tears of joy when his mother come out as a lesbian because he knew she had been living a lie for so many years.
“Imagine having to live your life as someone else and you think you’re protecting your kids. And for my mother to have to live as someone that she wasn’t and hide and protect her kids … [she] didn’t want to embarrass her kids for all this time. And for her to sit in front of me and say, ‘I think I love someone…’ I mean, I really cried. That’s a real story,” Jay Z said.
He added that;
“I cried because I was so happy for her that she was free. This happened eight months ago when the album was being made. She told me. I made the song the next day.”
