Two-Year-Old Boy with a Fork Jembe Stuck in His Head Succumbs Due to Delays from Health Workers

Published:

A two-year-old boy has succumbed after a delay of more than 20 hours from members of the Kenyatta National Hospital.
The story circulating online on Tuesday evening drew various reactions from the netizens. Judith Gathoni, the mother of the boy, Javis Maina, says his son was hit by the fork jembe while playing with his siblings at home. The incident occurred on Monday evening.
The late Maina was first rushed to the Thika Level V Hospital, where the medics conducted first aid. Thereafter, the boy was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for further treatment. The boy was admitted at Kenyatta National hospital at around 6 pm, where they waited for surgery to be done to the boy.
Maina was under observation for 20 hours. The family says he got some drips as an examination was being done prior to the operation. The little boy passed on at around 2 pm while undergoing a procedure to remove the fork jembe on his head.
Pressure from the netizens on social media forced Kenyatta National Hospital to respond to the matter through a Facebook post on their page.
“The patient had lost a lot of blood and as a result, the clotting process was not occurring as expected, thereby, delaying the surgical procedure as this would have been dangerous to the patient.” Said part of the post.
“The patient has since been stabilized and is currently undergoing a delicate operation in KNH theatres. We thank you for your concern and we assure you that the child is under the best care by our teams.” Continued part of the statement.
However, the situation turned out as unexpected. The body of the two-year-old is lying at the Kenyatta National Hospital Mortuary. A postmortem is to be done to determine the cause of the death.
