Police in Kiambu County on Friday arrested two suspects for allegedly using crushed padlocks disguised as gold to defraud an investor over Ksh.1 million.
The duo, Rogers Kipkogei and Collins Chavera, were nabbed from their hideout in Uthiru.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the pair while masquerading as agents of Congo-based gold barons, displayed crushed padlock dust to the gold investor, upon which they were paid the said amount.
“The victim who fell for the trick deposited the money to different Mpesa accounts, given to him by the suspects,” stated the DCI.
The sleuths smoked the pair out of their hideout where they recovered hundreds of SIM cards from local mobile telecommunication networks and stolen identification cards.
“Detectives believe the suspects use the personal information from the identification documents, to register the SIM cards used to steal money from Kenyans through mobile money transactions,” DCI explained.
The two suspects were arraigned in court and police were allowed to detain them pending further probe.
