A teacher from Bungoma has committed suicide by setting himself on fire after he received a letter of interdiction from his employees for allegedly defiling one of his pupils.
Wycliffe Andenyi, a teacher of Magemo Fym Primary School in Webuye East is said to have also tried setting his colleagues on fire following the incident.
Andenyi is said to have died of injuries he suffered from burn while receiving treatment at Lifecare Hospital.
The 54-year-old teacher reportedly received an interdictions letter from the County Teachers Service Commission (TSC) director, Joseph Kariuki. TSC accused him of having carnal knowledge with one of his pupils.
“I am directed by the TSC to say that, it’s alleged that you have breached a clause (a) (i) of the Third Schedule of the TSC Act by having immoral behaviour and having sexual intercourse with your student,” the letter from the officer read.
The school’s security officer Jackson Barasa said that the deceased teacher had arrived in schools early in the morning claiming that he had an appointment with the headteacher.
He then proceeded to the administration block where some teachers were and locked the door from inside, poured petrol on himself and the floor before setting himself ablaze.
The other teachers escaped the burn after escaping from the office through the window.
The teachers later come to his rescue who tried to out off the fire before rushing him to the hospital where he passed while receiving treatment.
Bungoma East Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) boss Peter Ramogi who confirmed the incident said that the matter is currently under investigation.
