A family of a 29-year-old man in Bondo, Siaya County is demanding justice after their kin died in police custody.
Vitalis Okinda is alleged to have died at Bondo Police station where he had been detained.
He had gone for his motorbike which had been confiscated by the police at Bondo Sub-County Hospital compound where he had reportedly parked it to receive the Covid-19 jab.
The family had wanted their son to be charged in Bondo Court instead of giving out Ksh40,000 that the police were demanding.
Vitalis’ mother Madam Okinda said when the postmortem was done in the presence of officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) the results showed he had internal bleeding in the head which was caused by some beating.
She said he had injuries all over his body and so they are questioning what the police said. The police said he was sick.
She accused the officers of hiding some information from them.
“They are not very clear about what happened. Officers from IPOA came and we recorded a statement and they witnessed the postmortem.
“He had injuries all over his body and he had internal bleeding in the head which led to his death,” the mother explained.
She says the doctors at Bondo Sub-County Hospital told them that her son was brought to the hospital past midnight and that he was already dead and was taken directly to the morgue.
