Siaya County isolation bed capacity increases to 66

Published:

Siaya County that was shamed publicly by President Uhuru Kenyatta for its incapacity to handle COVID-19 cases now has 66 isolation beds.

The number is still below the 300-bed capacity requirement.

The county increased the number of isolation beds after converting Ambira Sub-county Hospital into an isolation centre adding some 45 beds to its capacity.

Governor Cornel Rasanga said the county government has bought 65 beds for the Covid-19 hospital that is still under construction at the Siaya County Referral Hospital.

He said new isolation facilities that will have more than 300 beds are being constructed at Siaya County Referral Hospital as well as at Ambira and Bondo sub-counties. They are 30 percent complete and are expected to be done in the next 15 days.

He further disclosed that an oxygen plant had been set up at the county referral hospital.

“With a fully functional oxygen plant, we can supply oxygen to Covid-19 patients who need it in the isolation centres so far established,” he said. Siaya has so far reported 30 Covid-19 cases and one death. A total of 17 patients are in isolation — 15 of them are in Bondo and two are in Ambira Sub-county Hospital.

Fifteen of the cases had a history of travel, five of whom came from Nairobi, four from Mombasa and one case each from Eldoret, Migori and Tanzania while the other 15 were local transmissions.
