Reliable and Sustainable Food Security in Siaya.

The County Government of Siaya has taken a step in cushioning vulnerable farmers from the adverse effect of COVID- 19 in efforts to maintain food security and improve livelihood in the county.

 

Through the County COVID-19 Emergency Response Committee chaired by the Governor, urgent policies, plans and strategies to adapt to the volatile situation and mitigation of the consequences arising from the disease, have been identified and the county has acquired for distribution, seeds worth  Ksh.  2.9 million.

 

The seeds include African Leafy Vegetables, 205 kg of Spider plant (Akeyo),205kg Black Night Shade (Osuga), 205kg Amaranthus (Ododo), 205kg Crotolaria (Mito), 205kg African Sorrel (Mrenda), 400 bags Sweet potato vines (Orange fleshed)  and 100 bags of Cassava cuttings.

‘These were chosen because of their nutritional value and ability to cushion the vulnerable in terms of income within a short time”, said the governor during the hand over exercise to the CEC Agriculture Dr Elizabeth Odhiambo, who doubles up as the member of the committee. 

 

The beneficiaries will be identified by the findings of the ongoing survey of vulnerability carried out by the National Government and the Kenya Red Cross. 

 

This happens even as the county is experiencing other calamities which the county government is consequently dealing with to ensure the safety of the people of Siaya.
