President Uhuru Set For Lunch Date With Handshake Legislators Today

Published:

President Uhuru Kenyatta will today, Thursday 13, hold a meeting with Members of Parliament allied to him and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga at State House, Nairobi.

In the meeting schedule for this afternoon, the President is also said to have invited Raila Odinga and One Kenya Alliance (OKA) principals.

The meeting comes months after reports emerged that President Uhuru’s efforts to forge a coalition between Raila and the OKA principals ahead of the August General Elections flopped.

In a previous meeting held between the Head of State, Raila and the OKA principals, it emerged that some of the OKA principals were reluctant to squash their presidential ambitions in favour of the former Prime Minister who is believed to be Uhuru’s preferred presidential candidate.

Though it is not clear whether the president will use the meeting to once again try to convince the OKA principals to support Raila, sources claim that he (the president) will use the meeting to unveil the Azimio la Umoja team in the National Assembly.

“The meeting will be the ultimate unveiling of the Azimio Group in the National Assembly,” Eldas MP and the Secretary of the Jubilee Secretary Coalition joint Parliamentary Group Adan Keynan said.

On his side, Kieni MP Kanini Kega noted that the president might not use the meeting to discuss coalition talks as various parties within OKA and ODM have already unveiled their presidential candidates.

“It would be unfair to discuss coalition agreement between ODM and Jubilee in the presence of other parties,” the MP said.
