The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has apologised to Maragwa Member of Parliament Mary Wamaua who accused security detail at the Azimio la Umoja convention of mishandling her.
In a statement issued by the party’s Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, ODM says it regrets the unfortunate incident but could have been avoided if only she had informed the party prior that she would be joining them in the event.
“This regrettable incident could have been avoided if only she had let us know in advance that she would be joining us,” Sifuna said.
Sifuna’s statement comes a day after a video clip of the lawmaker alleging that she was shoved out of the entrance to the stadium by plain clothes officers went viral.
A visibly bitter and frustrated Wamaua told off the security officers, stating that as an elected leader, it was unfair to mishandle her, terming them disrespectful.
Wamaua who is allied to Deputy President William Ruto stormed out of the venue in protest, as she questioned how the security detail will behave if Raila is elected president come 2022.
“Na mkifika State House, itakuwa namna gani? Tunataka watu ambao wamenyenyekea. Mimi mjumbe amechaguliwa mnaniskuma kama viazi? Tutapatana kwenye debe (So how will the situation be when you get to State House? We want humble people. Why are you roughing me up, yet I am an elected leader? Let’s meet at the ballot),” she was heard saying as she stormed out of the stadia.
The DP Ruto allied politician was recently welcomed by the second in command to his United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party after she had announced that she had ditched the ruling party in favour of Ruto’s party.
