Kitutu Chache MP Richard Onyonka has been arrested by officers drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) over alleged inciteful remarks he made on Sunday while addressing a gathering in Kisii County.
Onyoka’s arrest follows an order by the Directorate of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji that called on the police to investigate him over the alleged hateful remarks.
“Reference is made to a video clip circulating on social media platforms in which Hon Richard Onyoka, MP for Kitutu Chache constituency is addressing a gathering in Kisii County. The alleged remarks captured in the video clip may be contrary to Articles 33(2) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010,” the DPP said.
Noordin Haji noted that the MP’s remarks amount to hate speech, the spread of hate and did not adhere to “the National Cohesion and Integration Act, No.12 of 2008”.
Following his arrest, Onyonka was taken to Kisii Central Police Station where he will be questioned over the allegation by the DCI.
