A 31-year-old man was on Tuesday presented before Milimani Law Court for forging M-Pesa messages to cheat his landlord that he had paid rents for 37 months.

The suspect, Emanuel Ian Osome was charged with the intent to defraud his landlord with false Mpesa transactions.

Osome is said to have committed the crime on diverse dates between November 1, 2018, and November 8 2021 at Krity Homes in Lang’ata, Nairobi.

He has been charged with five counts of fraudulent misuse of electronic data which is against the law and computer forgery.

The suspect’s action came to the limelight after the complainant wrote a letter to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer requesting a police investigation and action on the alleged fraud.

The complainant told the DCIO that Osome had been sending false Mpesa transaction messages to her caretaker who in turn issued him with rent payment receipts believing that he had made a genuine M-Pesa transaction.

Investigations established that there was no money paid by the suspects to the landlady’s bank account as claimed by the suspect.

The investigating officer also obtained a report from the Communication Authority of Kenya confirming that the accused had forged the Mpesa messages he sent the caretaker.

Osome pleaded not guilty and was released on a cash bail of Ksh200,000.
