Published:

The internet has gone abuzz after Apple music released the Top 100 Kenya Playlist, only to feature two songs from Kenya.

Apple Music Playlist ranks the songs according to the most streamed in the country, and for the record, 89 songs making waves locally are Nigerian, 9 are American and only 2 songs are Kenyan according to the site.

Netizens on Instagram have had their mixed reactions on the same after firebrand Eric Omondi clashed with Bien Sol -the only artist featured in the playlist as it stands. By the time of the release, Bien’s latest jam ‘Inauma’ and another featured track ‘Dimensions’ by Fully Focus were the only Kenyan songs on the playlist. However, the list is updated on a daily basis.

Eric has been championing for 75% Kenyan content airtime in the mainstream media, a campaign that has always hit rock bottom.

“So top 89 songs on Kenyan Apple Music are Nigerian, 9 are American and only 2 are Kenyan. When I tell you to SHUT up and listen when I talk you think it’s a Joke. You will stay in that position until the DAY you LISTEN to me!!!!!! WAKE UP!!!” wrote Omondi angrily.

Bien retaliated immediately as quoted, “Because where is your Netflix comedy special. Or whatever metric they use to measure success in comedy. You take out your steam on music while comedy is on its deathbed. Useless burukenge.”

Don Jazzy, a renowned Nigerian artist and founder of Marvin Records, the label behind the success of Ayra Starr who tops the Kenyan playlist took to Twitter to thank Kenyans for their immense support. A snippet from Don Jazzy’s official Twitter account read, “E Dey rush for Kenya. Thanks for the No. 1 guys. Congratulations @ayrastarr.”

The viral tweet by Jazzy attracted the attention of many, with Nigerians trolling Kenyans, asking if Kenyans don’t have their own musicians.
