Is Azimio One Kenya a Coalition?

Published:

Members of Parliament belonging to the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and Azimio One Kenya were on Tuesday given an opportunity by the speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula to deliberate on the issue of majority in the parliament.

In their discussion, a lot of political affiliation was noticed. Members of the Kenya Kwanza had it that Azimio is not a parliamentary political party.

“Honorable speaker we must then ask ourselves the question, is the Azimio One Kenya Alliance Political Party a party? Is it a parliamentary political party? And the straight answer honorable speaker is Azimio One Kenya Coalition Party does not exist as a parliamentary political party.” Said Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa.

Nominated MP John Mbadi explained to the house Articles 108 of the constitution that well stipulates how majority in parliament is formed. He further explained why Azimio One Kenya is coalition political party and a coalition party.

“I have heard the argument that we passed a law in this house that has created chaos or caused chaos. Nothing could be further from the truth Mr. Speaker. Let us accept the legal framework that we have. We might have been used to the old framework, but what we created as a house was where we can have a political party with corporate membership and therefore basically is a political coalition party and coalition party.” Mbadi explained.

“Mr. Speaker, if you want to argue that Azimio One Kenya is a political party and not a coalition of political parties, the question you would want to ask or address yourself to is what are the legal provisions for registering a political party. The legal provision are clear. You must have 24000 members. At least 1000 from majority of our counties which are 24. Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance was exempted from that, why, because it is a corporate political party.” Mbadi added.

All these were brought about on a discussion to determine which coalition has the majority in the national Assembly. However, the naming of the majority and minority was suspended to a later date.
