Kipchoge rewrites history in Berlin Marathon

Published:

The greatest of all time, Eliud Kipchoge set a new world record at the BMW Berlin marathon on Sunday.

Kipchoge smashed his very own world marathon record with a staggering 2:01:09 in the race, shading off about 30 seconds from his previous mark and cementing his status as the greatest ever.

Five minutes behind Kipchoge followed another Kenyan Mark Korir, and they were followed by Ethiopian runner Tadu Abate in the third position.

The Ineos challenge world-record holder made his fifth return to the streets of Berlin, and had already reignited a talk of a possible world record from athletics faithful in the build up to the race although he remained optimistic choosing to use the term ‘a good race.’

After his heroic win, Kenyans joined the rest of the world to shower Kipchoge with congratulatory messages, praising him for flying our flag high again. President William Ruto led other leaders and politicians to congratulate Kipchoge for the massive win.

“The greatest has done it again; breaking the world record! Congratulations @EliudKipchoge for winning the Berlin Marathon for the fourth time. You are truly the King of the Marathon,” President Ruto wrote via his official Twitter account.

Other great sports personalities who joined the queue to send Kipchoge warm messages include Victor Wanyama and Michael Olunga.

“How Eliud Kipchoge managed to leave behind his opponents for a whole 5 minutes which is like 2 km puzzles me! That is a long long way and depicts how he is surely the living legend, G.O.A.T, majestic #No human is limited,” former world javelin champion Julius Yego wrote on his Facebook page.

According to sources, it is anticipated that Kipchoge will bag home a whooping Ksh. 3 million for winning the race, Ksh. 6.8 million for breaking the world record and Ksh. 4.1 million for the time bonus.
