January and February 2022 witnessed more road carnage than same period in 2021, five Luo celebs perished in horrid accidents on Sunday and Monday alone.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 784 Kenyans died in road accidents between January and February 27th 2022, compared to 686 deaths within the same period in 2021.
In just a day, 17 people perished in separate road accidents in five counties on Sunday February 27th 2022.
Six people, among them two children, died in Isiolo town after a truck which lost control crashed into three shops. 12 people were lucky to escape death.
In Nyamira, five people perished and four others were injured after a matatu they were traveling in hit a stationary trailer in Nyamoke along the Kisii-Nyamira road. Four people were injured.
In Kisii County, a matatu driver died after his vehicle was involved in an accident along the Migori-Kisii road.
In Nakuru County, four Luo musicians died after their car hit a lorry ferrying sand in Kinungi area.
Witnesses said the driver of the saloon car was trying to overtake the lorry when the accident occurred.
Ndogo Jaraah whose real name is Phillip Omondi Owino died with all members of his band in the horrid accident.
The Luo musician together with three members of his band were traveling in a saloon car headed back to Kisumu after performing in Nairobi.
“Breaking Sad News. We have lost Ndogo Jaraah a promising Ohangla artist through a road accident early today on his way back to Kisumu.
“It has been confirmed that Ndogo and his team are all dead! George Williams aka Awillo Subaru keyboardist. Gody Jabusia (Keybodist) Hendry Mavinyo (Shaker),” Luo producer Wuod Fibi announced on Sunday.
The band was traveling from Nairobi to Kisumu after performing on Saturday November 26th at a club in Makongeni.
Ndogo Jaraah’s last post on Facebook was a promise to his fans that he would give them a thrilling performance like no other.
On Monday February 28th, Luo fashion designer and Instagram influencer Evans Ochieng alias Kaloleni died in a road accident.
Kaloleni who owned a clothing shop ‘Fine Label’ died together with his friend Warrance in the car accident.
NTSA and the traffic department have since launched a countrywide traffic enforcement operations to curb the rising cases of road accidents.
According to government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, the exercise kicked off on Monday, February 28th and targets motorists with un-prescribed number plates as well as vehicles with foreign plates without motor vehicle foreign permits.
Authorities are also seeking to arrest motorists who have additional lights on their vehicles, specifically strobe lights and flashing lights.
Unlicensed PSV operating illegally at night, drivers of taxi cars such as the Voxy, Sienta and Probox models, speeding vehicles ferrying miraa in Meru and Embu counties, unlicensed tuk-tuks operating around Nairobi and Mombasa and vehicles ferrying sugarcane in Western Kenya are now under the watchful eyes of authorities as they have been identified as biggest violators of traffic rules.
