Four times, the Presidency has eluded Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga and in what might be his last shot, Raila officially announced that he will vie for the fifth time, in a colourful event at Kasarani Sports Centre in Nairobi.
Unlike the four times, the former Prime Minister faces the 2022 contest in an environment that has changed much more than was expected. The famous 2018 handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta has turned out to be a blessing for him.
Azimio La Umoja Movement
The declaration of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), and its proposed amendments to the Constitution through a referendum, illegal, by the High Court, dealt a big blow to Odinga’s popularity.
Down but not out, the former Premier quickly changed tact and cobbled together a new alternative political slogan dubbed “Azimio La Umoja” and embarked on countrywide meetings to recover lost ground.
The success of the slogan saw Odinga declare it a political movement in his bid to consolidate votes and unite the country under his leadership.
Support from a section of powerful Mt. Kenya leaders
Raila has always found the central region unfriendly during his last attempts and being aware of the complications, he has devised a strategy to win the hearts and minds of the vote-rich region.
The ODM leader has begun a charm offensive, holding regular meetings with political leaders, influential businessmen and youth groups from the region something that is proving fruitful if the latest surveys are something to go by.
Council of Governors’ support
Raila also enjoys a loyal support base of several County bosses who see him as the best choice for the country.
He has managed to persuade some of the governors who were against him in previous elections and has so far seen over 20 governors express their unwavering support to his presidency terming him the ‘most pro-devolution’ candidate.
Speaking during the Azimio La Umoja convention at Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, Council of Governors chairman Martin Wambora stated that Raila has proved to be a champion of devolution.
President Uhuru’s endorsement
Even though the president is yet to publicly endorse Odinga as his preferred candidate, all signs’ point in that direction. Odinga and the president has found an ally in each other, the head of State has even gone ahead to describe the ODM boss as the force behind his recent government successful projects.
