Residents of Kisumu county have raised concern after an acute shortage of water has gripped various parts of Kisumu estates due to prolonged dry spells on water supply in parts of the city.
This was after the water levels in River Kibos dropped significantly due to the current dry spell being experienced in the country causing the Kajulu treatment plant’s production to drop drastically resulting in an intermittent supply in the parts of the city.
According to a press statement released by the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company Ltd (KIWASCO) on Friday, The worst affected estates are; Kanyamedha, Otonglo, Tiengre, Uzima, Mamboleo Guba, Wathorego, Kambogo, Gita, Kibos, Chiga, Lolwe, Migosi, Kogony, Riat College, Manyatta, Asengo Community and Coptic.
Now, residents have been forced to dig deep into their pockets to purchase water for their daily consumption.
According to Maurice Juma, a resident of Lolwe estate, they have been forced to buy precious commodities from vendors who have also increased the prices.
Another resident, Mary Achieng who comes from Manyatta lamented how she has been unable to have water in her house.
Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) managing director Thomas Odongo, he said they have stepped up production from Dunga water treatment plant to supplement.
“You are therefore advised to use water sparing and have adequate storage,” he said.
He also appealed to the residents to conserve the environment to mitigate against negative effects of climate change.
