Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has revealed that he is newly-formed Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) is open to working with Deputy President William Ruto ahead of 2022 polls.
Speaking to a local publication, Kiraitu said that he is open to working with DP Ruto on a coalition that he is not forced to fold his party and join Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
According to the governor, the country’s political scene has changed over the years and there is no longer room for single parties.
He noted that it is through the formation of coalitions that parties can have the bargaining power to air their issues or expectations to any presidential candidate.
He said the biggest challenge he has with Ruto is that he, the DP, has openly criticized the formation of smaller parties.
Murungi said that he cannot join Ruto’s UDA since his time in the ruling party, Jubilee was marked with uncertainties.
“We don’t want to join UDA because we have been in Jubilee. It was a big ocean but we went there and drowned. We don’t want to join UDA only for that to occur again. We want to remain in our boat. We are not going to join UDA, so long as he is not taking coalitions,” Murungi told Citizen TV.
Murungi also revealed that he has not reached any political agreement with Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja camp.
“In any case, we have not addressed a coalition agreement with Raila and we could just not go to Kasarani for the Azimio la Umoja Convention. We will have to sit down as a party and look at what he can bring to the table first,” Kiraitu said.
The governor further revealed that his party will decide on the person they will support for the presidency between Raila and Ruto come March next year.
