Kisumu governor professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o on Monday led the county to condole with the family of the late mama Sarah Obama.
The governor termed the passing on of the late matriarch as a big blow, describing her as a steadfast woman who cared for not only her family but also the larger Kogello village.
Sarah Anyango Obama who is the grandmother to the former US president Barrack Obama died on Monday at around 4.40AM at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Hospital in Kisumu where she was receiving treatment.
The news of her death was relayed by the family with her daughter Marsat saying that she died at the age of 99 years.
She was the third wife to Hussein Onyango Obama, the father to Barack Hussein Obama Senior – the Kenyan father to the former American head of state.
In the meantime, the 44th US President had close ties to his grandmother and last visited her at the family in K’Ogello in July 2018.
She was the primary caregiver for Barack Obama Sr. after his mother, Akuma, left the family when her children were still young.

As the most surviving member of the Obama family, she is the one who confirmed to have witnessed when Barack Obama Jr. was born in Kenya.
She lived in Nyang’oma Kogelo village, Siaya county, 30 miles west of western Kenya’s main town, Kisumu, on the edge of Lake Victoria.
On July 4, 2008, Sarah Obama attended the United States Independence Day celebrations in Nairobi, hosted by Michael Ranneberger, the US ambassador in Kenya.
