Pregnant Rarieda Woman Attacked By Crocodile At Kowange Beach

A pregnant woman was on Saturday evening attacked by a crocodile at Kowange beach within the sub-county of Rarieda, Siaya county.

The 32-year old Judith Akinyi who is also a fish monger went to fetch water at the shores of Lake Victoria before she was attacked by the unforgiving crocodile.

The unfortunate Saturday incident was confirmed by the chairman of Kowange Beach Management Unit (BMU) Mr. Hesbon Okelo Adhola and according to him, the woman was mauled at the shores of the lake before the animal took off with her helpless body.

“The crocodile mauled her before running with her into the lake,” said one Mr. Hesbon Okelo Adhola, a resident of Rarieda.

However, he disclosed to the Radio Ramogi that community members in conjunction with the local fishermen managed to retrieve the body of the woman under some papyrus reeds after searching for several hours.

In the meantime, the Kowange Beach Management Unit through their chairman Mr. Okelo Adhola complained that cases of crocodiles attacking residents were rampant in the region of Rarieda. As a result, he called upon the leadership of the Kenya Wildlife Service to reign in to put to an end the human-wildlife conflict.

Upon retrieval, the pregnant woman’s body was transferred to St. Mary’s Lwak Mission Hospital mortuary.
